How Type Advantages Work

Key Difference from Traditional Pokemon

Pokemon TCG Pocket uses a simplified system:

✅ What's Different
  • • Weakness adds +20 damage (not double)
  • NO resistances in the game
  • • Each Pokemon has only ONE weakness
  • • Types are simplified for balance
🎯 Why This Matters
  • • More accessible to new players
  • • Faster-paced battles
  • • Type advantage is significant but not game-ending
  • • Strategy still crucial

💡 Damage Calculation Example

Scenario: Pikachu EX (Electric) attacks Greninja (Water)

Base Attack Damage: 80
Weakness Bonus (Water weak to Electric): +20
Total Damage: 100

🎯 Strategic Type Matchup Tips

🔥 Playing Into Weaknesses

That extra +20 damage can turn 2-hit KOs into 1-hit KOs. Always check your opponent's bench for weaknesses before attacking!

💧 Covering Your Weaknesses

Include Pokemon of different types in your deck to handle unfavorable matchups. A pure Fire deck will struggle against Water decks.

🌿 Type-Neutral Strategies

Colorless Pokemon like Snorlax and Wigglytuff EX work well in any deck since they're not limited by energy type and have fewer bad matchups.

⚡ Meta-Dependent Type Choices

If you're seeing lots of Fire decks (Mega Blaziken), bring Water types. If Electric is dominant, Fighting types become valuable.

🔮 Don't Over-Focus on Type Advantage

+20 damage is significant but not game-breaking. A well-built deck with synergy beats a poorly-built "counter" deck every time.

⚠️ Common Type-Related Mistakes

Mixing Too Many Energy Types
Using 3+ energy types makes your Energy Zone unreliable. Stick to 1-2 types maximum.
Ignoring Type Weaknesses
Not checking if your active Pokemon is weak to the opponent's can cost you 20+ HP per attack.
Building "Hard Counter" Decks
A deck built solely to counter one type will lose to everything else. Aim for balance.
Forgetting About STAB
Some Pokemon get bonuses when using moves matching their type. Pay attention to card text!

🔗 Multi-Type Deck Examples

While single-type is often best, these combinations work well together:

🔮 Psychic + Colorless

Use Colorless tanks (Snorlax) while setting up Psychic sweepers (Mewtwo EX). Colorless doesn't compete for Psychic energy.

Example: Mewtwo EX + Snorlax + Gardevoir

🔥 Fire + Fighting

Both types share offensive synergy. Fire handles Grass/Metal, Fighting handles Dark/Steel.

Example: Mega Blaziken EX + Machamp EX

💧 Water + Electric

Electric counters Water's weakness. Water handles Electric's Ground weakness. Natural synergy.

Example: Pikachu EX + Starmie EX

🌿 Grass + Psychic

Grass handles Water threats, Psychic handles Fighting. Good defensive coverage.

Example: Venusaur EX + Gengar EX
